Launch of the "Verna Jones"
19 November 2011
The 'Verna Jones' is named after our first female Life Member
who was a stalwart of the club for 50 years. There is no better way to remember someone than to name a rescue boat after them - Verna's passion for the club and its members will never be forgotten. Her family attended the club yesterday for lunch, then the formal launching of our latest RIB.

Mr David Jones -
"I name this vessel the Verna Jones - may God bless her and all who sail in her"

Alison, David, Murray, Glenys, Colin Jones

NEW RESCUE BOAT
Dinghy sailing in Australia has a great safety record. This is due in no small part to the work done by volunteer rescue boat operators who are an integral part of all safe sailing throughout Australia.
As part of an overall safety program review for KBSC for all sailors and rescue boat personnel, the club will be conducting training in rescue boat procedures in the next few weeks. Participants will be notified at the Saturday briefings and it is also intended that sailors will practice rescue and towing procedures before racing on the selected days. All Sabots should have a dedicated tow line which is at least 2 1/2 times the length of the boat. Mirrors and Lasers may use their mainsheets provided these can quickly be totally freed up ready for towing. Mainsails must also be able to be dropped quickly and effectively in the event of an emergency and this will be part of the testing procedures. Centreboards and rudders must also be effectively secured.
Sailors must wear an Australian Standards approved PFD which is weight appropriate.
The Principal Race Officer (PRO) of the day will, in consultation with the Vice Commodore and other senior sailors, determine if it is safe to run training and/or races each Saturday. The Weather Bureau is always consulted for wind and weather forecasts and their advice is also an integral part of the decision making. The decision to cancel a day's sailing is not taken lightly and will not always be popular with sailors but the safety of all personnel must be considered. This includes Rescue Boat crews who are sometimes subject to extreme wind, waves, rain and sleet and their comfort and well being is just as important as the sailors.
Any directions given by a rescue boat to a sailor must be obeyed without question.
No sailors are to leave the beach until adequate rescue cover is an attendance.
Rescue boats do not double as spectator boats as in genuine emergencies rescue crews should not have to be concerned for the wellbeing of people other than themselves and the sailors on the course.
All rescue boat helms must present their current boat licence to Geoff Bruckard for verification and recording. Provisional licence holders must be accompanied by an adult at all times.
The rosters are on the web. Please ensure that you note your rostered duty and arrange your own swap if unable to attend. Everyone is expected to take their turn on the roster as part of their contribution to club life.
Wanted: wet suits, wet suit boots, spray jackets etc small sizes for sailing school kids.
These can be listed and sold via the Classifieds section.
